The Effort to Build the Soldiers and Sailors Monument in Indianapolis

This blog post is somewhat unique, since it really is not a post for this blog, but a blog post, or 'field note,' that I wrote for the Monument Knows initiative. As noted on their website, "[t]he Monument Knows is a public humanities and civic research project centered on the Soldiers & Sailors Monument and Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis." I've provided research for this effort and authored the field note linked below (just click the image) which explores the lobbying and advocacy efforts to construct the Soldiers and Sailors Monument in the years after the Civil War. What seemed like a commonsense idea actually took 20 years with much discussion and a few false starts before a plan moved forward.
Be sure to check out the rest of the Monument Knows website for more information about the initiative, additional field notes, and updates on upcoming events. And as always, thanks for reading!
